South African whites earn 6 times more than blacks

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? White South Africans earn six times more than black South Africans nearly two decades after the end of apartheid and much remains to be done to reduce the disparities between rich and poor, the president said after the release of the country's census.

"These figures tell us at the bottom of the rung is the black majority who continue to be confronted by deep poverty, unemployment, and inequality, despite the progress that we have made since 1994," President Jacob Zuma said of the South Africa Census 2011 released on Tuesday.

On the positive side, people's access to basic services, such as clean water, electricity and garbage removal has more than doubled in the same amount of time, he said. And more South African dwellings have TVs than refrigerators and more cellphones than electric or gas stoves, the census said.

South Africa's population has increased by 7 million people in the last decade to 51.8 million by October 2011, according to the census. And for the first time in the three censuses conducted since 1994, the number of people identifying themselves as colored ? a term used by the government for people of mixed race ? is higher, at 4.62 million, than those who describe themselves as white at 4.59 million. More than 41 million describe themselves as black and 1.3 million as Indian or Asian.

A breakdown of the population also shows that close to 60 percent of the population is under 35. There are more children under the age of four, with 5.6 million, than in each of the 5-to-9 or 10-to-14 age brackets.

The average household income in South Africa has more than doubled in the past decade, according to the census, which said that households earned an average of 48,000 rand ($6,000) per year in 2001 compared to 103,204 rand ($12,900) by October 2011.

Planning Minister Trevor Manuel said the income distribution among race and gender groups was the most startling of the figures.

"It confirms our worst fears and I think it presents us with an enormous challenge," he said.

The average annual income for black households was 60,613 rand ($7,500) in 2011, according to the census, while white households earned an average of 365,134 rand ($45,600) per year.

Meanwhile, households headed by women earned on average 67,330 rand ($8,400) in 2011, compared to 128,329 rand ($16,000) for male counterparts.

The census figures on services said nearly 1.3 million households did not have access to piped water, and the majority of those households are black.

Poverty also remains an issue with more than 1.2 million "informal" dwellings around the nation, including squatter camps, but not including the 712, 956 shacks. And while just over 8.2 million households have flushing toilets that connect to a sewage system, 748,597 households around the country have no toilets at all.

"Much remains to be done to further improve the livelihoods of our people especially in terms of significant disparities that still exist between the rich and poor," said President Zuma. "Government departments must now use this information wisely in planning for the extension of services."

He referenced a National Development Plan to eliminate poverty, reduce inequality and address the problem of unemployment. The plan says that the poor should be able to have a toilet, clean water, food, stable housing and heat by the year 2030. It also says that each community will have a school, library, teachers, a police station with "upright" police and a health clinic with nurses.

Myanmar gov't pleads for end to ethnic strife

SITTWE, Myanmar (AP) ? Myanmar's government has appealed for peace in the western state of Rakhine, warning that ethnic violence there that has taken at least 56 lives in recent days risks harming the country's reputation as it seeks to install democratic rule.

The mob violence pitting the Buddhist Rakhine community against the Muslim Rohingya has seen entire villages torched and has drawn international calls for government intervention.

"The army, police, and authorities in cooperation with local people will try to restore peace and stability and will take legal action against any individual or organization that is trying to instigate the unrest," said a statement from the office of President Thein Sein published Friday in the state-run Myanma Ahlin newspaper.

Since Sunday, 25 men and 31 women have been reported dead and 60 men and four women injured in the violence in four Rakhine townships, state government spokesman Win Myaing said Thursday. He did not break down the casualties by ethnic group.

The government said 1,948 houses and 8 religious buildings had been destroyed through Wednesday.

"As the international community is closely watching Myanmar's democratic transition, such unrest could tarnish the image of the country," the presidential statement said.

In June, ethnic violence in the state left at least 90 people dead and destroyed more than 3,000 homes. About 75,000 have been living in refugee camps ever since.

Curfews in place in some areas since then have been expanded due to the latest violence, but tensions have stayed high in part because the government has failed to find any long-term solution other than segregating the communities.

The long-brewing conflict is rooted in a dispute over the Muslim residents' origin. Although many Rohingya have lived in Myanmar for generations, they are widely denigrated as intruders who came from neighboring Bangladesh to steal scarce land.

The U.N. estimates their population in Myanmar at 800,000. But the government does not count them as one of the country's 135 ethnic groups, and so ? like neighboring Bangladesh ? denies them citizenship. Human rights groups say racism also plays a role: Many Rohingya, who speak a Bengali dialect and resemble Muslim Bangladeshis, have darker skin and are heavily discriminated against.

A statement issued late Thursday by the office of U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon described the latest violence as "deeply troubling."

"The widening mistrust between the communities is being exploited by militant and criminal elements to cause large-scale loss of human lives, material destruction, displaced families as well as fear, humiliation and hatred affecting the people from all walks of life," it said.

Ban called on Myanmar authorities "to take urgent and effective action to bring under control all cases of lawlessness."

"The vigilante attacks, targeted threats and extremist rhetoric must be stopped. If this is not done, the fabric of social order could be irreparably damaged and the reform and opening up process being currently pursued by the government is likely to be jeopardized," said Ban.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the U.S. was deeply concerned about the reports and urged restraint.

An Associated Press photographer who traveled to Kyauktaw, one of the affected townships 45 kilometers (75 miles) north of the Rakhine capital of Sittwe, said he saw 11 wounded people brought by ambulance Thursday to the local 25-bed hospital, most with gunshot wounds.

One was declared dead after arrival. All the victims being treated were Rakhine, but that could reflect an inability or unwillingness of Rohingya victims to be treated there.

A volunteer at the hospital, Min Oo, said by telephone that five bodies, including one of a woman, had also been brought there. He said the injured persons were brought by boat from Kyauktaw town 16 kilometers (10 miles) away.

Accounts by Rakhine villagers in the area suggested great confusion and tension. The villager said that when groups of Rakhine and the Rohingya had a confrontation, government soldiers shot into a crowd of Rakhine, even though, according to his claim, it had been dispersing. The villager would not give his name for fear of violent reprisals.

"We feel very unsafe because soldiers are not protecting us but protecting the Muslim villages. They shot the Rakhine people when people got near Muslim villages," said Aung Than, a resident of Kyauktaw township, 74 kilometers (46 miles) north of Sittwe.

There have been concerns in the past that soldiers were failing to protect the Rohingya community, but the Rakhine villager's account hints that Myanmar's military may have been defending the Rohingya in this case.

The crisis has proven a major challenge to Thein Sein's government and to opposition leader and Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been criticized by some outsiders as failing to speak out strongly against what they see as repression of the Rohingya.

Who is Bloody Face? That?s the question that?s preoccupying many around the Web this morning, following last evening?s exposition-heavy episode of American Horror Story: Asylum. The conventional wisdom?which Abby and I shared in our chat?is that we?re meant to believe its Dr. Arden, given his demonstrated interest in bondage and forced power-play with prostitutes, but that it?s actually probably someone else. After all, Arden?s already pretty old in 1964, so for him to hang around long enough to stab Adam Levine (good riddance) in 2012 would require some truly miraculous feats of science. Jen Chaney over at the Washington Post has floated the intriguing notion that perhaps our skin-masked killer is none other than the good Monsignor, who, as we learned over he and Sister Jude?s dinner of Julia Child?s coq au vin in Episode 1, possesses a hunger for power as well as perfectly browned mushrooms. I?ll definitely be keeping an eye on him in future episodes.

Reviewers are also really keying in to how much of this show?s tension comes from the guilt-complex inherent to certain brand of Catholicism. This episode saw a gauzy flash-back to Sister Jude?s years of ? indiscretion, a moment which led Sister Chaney to the following analysis: ?Sister Jude is, herself, a sinner, as worthy of having her head shaved as Shelley the Nymphomaniac. So when she?s punishing her charges, really, she?s punishing herself.? That hits the nail on the head, or is it the patient on the ass?

Speaking of bare bottoms, if you?re wondering how awkward it was to film all those scenes of chastisement, check out this ? revealing ? interview with actor Evan Peters in Vulture. Sounds like the cast of American Horror Story has to get comfortable with one another?s dark secrets pretty quickly on set.

Now, before we leave Briarcliff, I have a question to pose to our commenters. Since we all know that Sister Mary Eunice is clearly the victim of some demon-hopping, what do you think her/its next steps are going to be? I noted with interest her intensified curiosity about the creatures in that Arden?s keeping in the woods outside the asylum. Does anyone else remember that story from Bible school about Jesus driving demons from two men into a herd of pigs? If the creatures in the woods are powerful, maybe the demon would prefer them to Sister Mary?s mortal coil. Or maybe he just wants to arrange for them to be homes for his hellish friends Legion and Beelzebub. In any case, just something to gnaw on while we wait for next week?s episode.

Galactic snack time: Stream of stars slowly being ingested by the Milky Way

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, researchers have discovered a band, or stream, of stars believed to be the remnant of an ancient star cluster slowly being ingested by the Milky Way, Earth's home galaxy.

"The Milky Way is constantly gobbling up small galaxies and star clusters," said Ana Bonaca, a Yale graduate student and lead author of a study forthcoming in Astrophysical Journal Letters. "The more powerful gravity of our Milky Way pulls these objects apart and their stars then become part of the Milky Way itself."

Researchers have previously found evidence of the Milky Way eating up dwarf galaxies. Bonaca argues that the newly found stellar stream is the remnant of a star cluster rather than of a larger galaxy, because the stream is very narrow.

"Our discovery is more of a light snack than a big meal for the Milky Way," says Marla Geha, associate professor of astronomy at Yale and a co-author of the study. "Studying this digestion process in detail is important because it gives us new insight into how all galaxies form and evolve."

The new band of stars, or stellar stream, it is the first of its kind found in the southern Galactic sky, a region that has been hard to examine due to a relative lack of deep-sky imaging there. Deeper imaging enables astronomers to detect fainter stars.

Named the Triangulum stream, the newly discovered stellar stream could also help astronomers reconstruct how the Milky Way's mass is distributed, further revealing its dynamic structure.

Galaxies are believed to form hierarchically through the merger of smaller galaxies and still smaller star clusters. Stellar streams form as they are ripped apart by the gravitational force of galaxies. This process may be the primary way galaxies such as the Milky Way grow in mass, the researchers say.

Triangulum was found by searching a region recently surveyed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III), an international collaboration that is mapping the sky through wide-field photometry.

Bonaca, Geha and co-author Nitya Kallivayalil, a Yale postdoctoral fellow, relied specifically on the survey's Data Release 8, which included information about vast new areas of the southern galactic sky.

Research support was provided by the National Science Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Eyes Wide Shut - "We Are In A Bad Spot" | ZeroHedge

After traveling some, speaking with lots of people, reading, and digesting, I cannot escape the conclusion that things remain hopelessly off track.? Whatever form of 'recovery' is being sought here simply will not arrive.

The core of my views is shaped by the idea that the very thing being sought, more economic growth (and exponential growth, at that), is exactly the root of the problem.? I suppose I would take a similarly dim view of an alcoholic trying to drink their way back to health as I do the increasingly interventionist central bank and associated political policies the world over.

Go on then, drink more, but I think we all know what the result will be.

The most pressing concept at the center of it all is the idea of net energy, or the energy returned on energy invested.? As I explained in the Crash Course, the price of energy is not really the most pressing that we need to keep track of.? Instead, what we care about is the net, or surplus, energy that is returned from our energy exploration and production efforts for society to do with as it wishes.

Figure 1:? This hypothetical chart reveals the energy returned (green area) on energy invested (red part) and postulates what trying to live in a world of 3:1 energy returns would look like visually.? Where petroleum finds of just a few decades ago where offering 95% or greater returns on energy invested, a future of 3:1 oil offers just a 66% return.

The above chart reveals the world towards which we are rapidly moving with new petroleum finds being deeper, tighter, smaller, and generally more difficult to get to and extract, thereby offering lower net energy returns than in the past.

If there's less 'green area' in which to organize ourselves, then we will simply have to do fewer things.? However, the idea that we are going to get increasing amounts of exponentially-growing economy in conjunction with falling net energy is simply nuts.? It is insane, or at least developmentally immature.

Predictions for a World of Declining Net Energy

The world around me makes a lot more sense when I think about it in terms of net energy and where we are in that story.? ?Everywhere I go, I simply see oil, oil, and more oil, expressed in jets in the air, cars and trucks on the road, abundant and varied food types at every time of the year, and stores crammed with consumer goods from hither and yon.? We truly live in the age of abundance.

Yet that abundance is heavily subsidized by petroleum as well as other fossil fuels.

Where the prior 150 years were defined by ever-increasing amounts of both gross and net energy, a remarkable experience unlikely to ever again be replicated, the next 150 will be defined by its exact opposite.

The predictions for living in such a world are impossible to make in terms of timing and magnitude, but the trends and direction can be pinned down.

The big picture items are these:

  • Living standards are going to fall.? Ever-rising gross and net amounts of energy provide the essential building blocks for rising living standards, both directly through the goods and services brought to our doorsteps, such as food and warmth and mobility, and indirectly by allowing lots and lots of people to deploy their talents to things other than securing the basics.? In fact, this process has already begun; it will follow the 'outside in' model where the weaker elements of society and the weaker nation states will absorb the first effects of 'less than there used to be.'?
  • Inflation will come.? Because of the tendency of humans to try and print their way out of trouble, and because the system is now so saturated with debt that 'allowing' it to crumble to meet the realities of a world of less would risk a catastrophic systemic collapse of institutions and ruling parties, there's not much doubt that sooner or later all this will end in a very scary round of inflation.? Some currencies will not survive at all, and the areas served by them will experience hyperinflation first and complete monetary destruction second.
  • Stocks and bonds will fail to generate real returns.? Real returns, meaning positive growth in the value of stocks and bonds after inflation is subtracted, are an impossibility in a world where the economy is not growing in real terms.? You have to have real growth in the economy if you want real growth in stocks and bonds (in aggregate, that is).? Stripping away all of the gobbledy-gook, real GDP growth is simply not possible without real increases in real things ? and those depend, in very large measure, on how much net energy there is to go around.? With declining net energy, there will fewer things to sell and do.?
  • Retirements will be postponed, if they happen at all.? It is only the very recent generations that have been afforded the reality of this thing called 'retirement,' which is the idea that you can live off of one's prior savings and investments for a decade or three, consuming and not producing the whole time.? Not so coincidentally (to me, at any rate), retirement and the exploitation of fossil fuels came along at roughly the same time.? That is, with enough 'green area,' we humans can do anything at all that we want with all that surplus energy. We can go to the moon, we can take long holidays to distant places, we can host Olympics, we can retire or do any of a billion other things.? For many, especially those at the margins of society, retirement will simply not be an option.? Retirement as a concept, and these individuals specifically, will be casualties of circumstances.
  • We're just going to do fewer things and produce less stuff.? What exactly will go away as the green area gets pinched downwards is impossible to predict, as much will depend on decisions that have not yet been made.? Perhaps we'll do something completely surprising with our remaining energy, channel the spirits of Easter Island, and build some huge yet frivolous monuments to ourselves.? Perhaps we'll squander the last bits of good energy on bad wars that end up destroying infrastructure that could only be built when there was enough surplus to go around.? Or maybe we'll get it right and choose a future that we can strive for and use our remaining resources wisely to achieve those dreams. While the exact features are impossible to predict, we can say that the map of our territory will shrink.? We won't be able to do everything, or even very many things as compared to before.?
  • More resources will be dedicated to and consumed by the energy sector.? One easy observation to make is that if net energy is declining, then we are going to be spending more of our energy wealth on the process of obtaining more energy.? This is one great field to be in, whether in the production side or the efficiency side.? If it takes more and more energy to get energy, what does that mean?? It means more drilling, pipelines, processing facilities, and all of the thousands of job types and millions of parts and components that are needed to get the energy out of the ground and to market.? As prices inevitably rise, the desire (if not the necessity) of using energy more efficiently will skyrocket.? Everything in the entire "built" environment, from commercial and residential buildings, to factories, to how we move ourselves around, and the water we drink will be targets for improvements and enhancements.? If you are thinking of a career to move into, the energy sector is a great place to start.

Eyes Wide Shut

I think we're in a bad spot.? I mean the globe here, but the developed economies in particular.? I am losing hope that we will navigate towards anything other than a hard landing at some point because even with copious amounts of data accumulating suggesting that the old ways are not working, I cannot detect even the slightest hint of original thinking or new thoughts coming out of the marbled halls of power.

Business-as-usual and more-of-the-same seem to be the only operative ideas right now.? And that's not really unexpected; systems always try to preserve themselves long after it should be obvious that a new tack is in order.? So there's nothing really surprising here about where things seem to be headed.

But what is a bit startling to me is the number of individuals that have not yet caught onto the idea that things have permanently and irrevocably changed.

If you're a PC maker launching a new lineup of Windows 8 devices, you're going to look awfully square if you don't have at least one touch-enabled all-in-one to show off. Clearly, ASUS got the memo. Here at a press event in New York City, the company announced the ET2300, a 23-inch desktop whose display can be pushed down to lie basically flat -- a pretty ubiquitous form factor these days. Starting with that IPS screen, it has 1080p resolution and promises horizontal viewing angles of 178 degrees. Under the hood, it runs your choice of Core i3, i5 or i7 processor, with either integrated Intel graphics or NVIDIA's GT 630M GPU. (Even then, you can choose between one and two gigs of dedicated video memory.) Other specs include up to 8GB of RAM, up to 2TB in HDD storage, a slot-loading DVD drive, Intel Wireless Display and optional Thunderbolt connectivity. Additionally, like ASUS' other products (even its tablets and phones), it makes use of SonicMaster's audio technology. We haven't heard anything regarding pricing or availability just yet, but we'll update this post if we do.

Squeezing in between Nokia's Asha series and the Lumia 610, the wallet-friendly Lumia 510 has been unveiled in India. The smartphone will be priced around $199 when it ships next month in India and China. It will eventually make its way to other Asia-Pacific countries and South America, but there's no details yet on any stateside availability. We did expect this Microsoft-powered device to turn up with version 7.8 of its mobile OS, but instead, there's Windows Phone 7.5 and the promise to an eventual upgrade. I assume there's no way he can come? That's what I did on the first trip my hubby had to take.

My husband had to go away alone not long after D day #2, and what he did was write me one letter for each day he was going to be gone. Some were romantic, some were remembrances, whatever. He gave them to me and told me to open one each day and I did. Most helped, one triggered me though. But it was the thought that meant something - the fact he knew and wanted to help me feel better. He also had written me an 'apology letter' for me to keep with me and read whenever I needed to when I couldn't talk to him. So that helped.

He also emailed me his itinerary every day and texted me as much as he could whenever he could. We didn't have a long distance plan, but now we do, so if he was to go away now he would call to say good morning, call on his lunch, talk to me at night.

I won't lie, it was REALLY FREAKING HARD. But we got through it and it's only a memory now, and not a particularly bad one.

We did a lot of rug sweeping after D-day to make things normal. For a period of time, everything seemed really great. Now that I?ve returned to work, he?s definitely anxious and really starting to freak out a bit. He has FINALLY agreed to marriage counseling which I?ve been asking him to do for years. Our first appointment is 10/31.

Here?s the question (sorry for all of that): I?m traveling this week for a few days for work (this isn?t optional, it?s what pays the bills in our household). He hasn?t said anything directly but I can tell this is really triggering him.

What can I do to help with this? I don?t want a big blow up or fight right before I leave and want to make things better for all of us.

First off, kudos to you for considering your H's feelings here.

If I were you, I would flirt with your H via text as much as possible while you are gone. Call him at night. Share with him what happened during the day, even boring stuff. Engage with him. Tell him you wish he was there with you.

I am going to give it every effort with MC/IC and see if we can revive this. I have been reading this site like a madwoman and really seeing quite a few places where we just let it all fall apart. I'm amazed we have feelings left for each other so it does give me a bit of hope (pun not intended).

I would LOVE it if he could come with us but with the little one and two dogs, that just won't work.

The idea of the letters is awesome. I really like that one. It reminds me of what I used to do when he was gone filming for a month or two at a time and I'd leave romantic cards in his suitcase in various clothing so he'd find them at different times.

I usually do call in the morning and evening so I'll ramp that up even more.

My H cheated on work conferences, and for me now, that is a no go area. I can't personally deal with the triggers and trauma and worry of 'he might be' because he's had too much to drink, and some other woman is giving him an inch.

My H seemed to forget he had a wife and family that he apparently loves and wants to remain with, because he drank too much and felt an urge he couldn't put aside. So, from this day forward he will have to spend more time travelling, and no time spending the night away from his home.

This will ultimately cause issues, with me and his job.....I do not doubt that. But he messed up and this is the consequence.

I don't envy your husband, he will be feeling terrible.

If I could give you some advice, don't drink! Text and phone him often as is possible. Be sure to phone last thing at night, no matter how late it gets and first thing in the morning. It might just take the edge of it for him, if you really have. O choice but to go, and he has no choice to go with you.

I know we have lunch meetings schedule with the whole leadership team but I didn't see a dinner. I'll reach out to my boss and see - better to know ahead of time than spring something on hubby unexpected while I'm gone.

I actually had the exact opposite situation. I was at a work conference when I found out my wife was having an EA. So the next time I went out of town, it was ME who had the serious triggers. And most people I know behave themselves at out of town events. The cheaters are the exceptions.

I nearly had to stay at the exact same hotel, on the exact anniversary of DDay1. Got out of going to that conference again.

The biggest issue is simply the separation, whether work, vacation, or family obligation. There are going to be times when you can't be together, and surviving those days is paramount. Strategies for when you are separated need to be addressed and strategized ahead of time. Just ask your H what he needs. Express to him that you'll do whatever it takes, but that these trips are necessary for your job.

, it was apparent many restaurants are trying to create sustainable, farm-to-table menus. It's a great city if you're an eco-conscious traveler due to the many options for any price level. To help guide you, here are some top picks for morally conscious cuisine in Vancouver.

I'm not sure there are any other restaurants in the city that take creative sustainability to the level Diva at the Met does. Chef Hamid Salimian and his team enjoy foraging when they can, even for the organic matters like stones, driftwood and torched bark that make up the snack plates. Chef Salimian visualizes what most can not even fathom, while remaining as organic as possible. For example, a slice of chicken bacon from a biodiverse farm might be brined and smoked for days and come on a stone slab, while a squid ink-infused mussel bread will be topped with roe and made to look like coral. Seafood comes from Ocean Wise-certified providers, while produce comes from farms with high crop biodiversity. In terms of farms, most of their produce comes from North Arm Farm, Sapo Bravo, Glourish Organics and Cherry Lane Farm. Although an upscale restaurant, meals can be affordable, with prices ranging from $19 to $38 for an entree, to the five-course tasting menu at $55 and the seven-course tasting menu at $75.

Cibo Trattoria

Like Diva at the Met, Cibo Trattoria immerses you in a relaxed, romantic ambiance. However, while Diva focuses on surreal gastronomy, Cibo Trattoria serves up rustic Italian fare with a modern twist. What's really interesting at this venue is they change their menu daily, focusing on what's fresh and in-season. While certain meats and cheeses come from Italy to get authenticity, much of their ingredients are locally sourced from British Columbia farms, with deliveries coming daily. For example, their radishes come from Aldergrove while their watercress is purchased from Hannah Brooks Farm in Langley. Typical dishes may include a handmade paccheri pasta with meatballs, oregano, San Marzano tomatoes and ricotta salada, crispy ox tongue with marinated heirloom peppers or roast bone marrow garlic and parsley bread crumbs and apple salad. They also do seasonally inspired dishes for fresh ingredients, like pumpkin ravioli with chili, garlic, marjoram and amaretti. You can sample local wines from the Okanagan and Fraser valleys. And although they have to reprint their menus daily, all printouts are done on recycled paper, which is also recycled after use. The menu includes affordable small plates as well as pastas for about $15 and entrees for less than $30.

As the founding restaurant in the Vancouver Aquarium Ocean Wise Program, C Restaurant was one of the first in Vancouver to deconstruct seafood supply lines, dealing directly with the fisherman to ensure a product that is of the highest quality and ethical sensitivity. Since the restaurant focuses on seasonal freshness, there really isn't a signature dish. Instead, its signature is to utilize sustainable seafood and local produce as much as possible. Not only is their food sustainable, but their wine program features vintages from British Columbia's Okanagan Region, as well as global wines made with an organic and biodynamic philosophy. The restaurant is contemporary, with entrees averaging $30.

Juno Vancouver Sushi Bistro

You don't need to eat at an upscale restaurant to enjoy a sustainable meal. And with Vancouver having myriad sushi establishments, it would be wrong not to include one on this list. Located in Yaletown, Juno Vancouver Sushi Bistro doesn't simply churn out rolls, they focus on high-quality cuisine and fresh ingredients, employing only serious Japanese chefs. Ingredients include wild seafood, natural beef, free-range chicken and heritage KUROBUTA pork, all locally-sourced from British Columbia farms. If you're in the mood for a local drink, Juno serves sakes from the Granville Island Artisan Sake Maker and BC "Vintners Quality Alliance" (VQA) wines.

This high-end restaurant opened in 1992 with a menu that featured locally-sourced food. Eventually, Raincity Grill also added their signature 100-mile menu, which showcased items with ingredients from within 100-miles of Vancouver.

"Our menu is a tribute to the local farmers, fisherman and producers of British Columbia," it states on their homepage. "The Chef sources out the best organic, sustainable products available ... 'Farm-to-table' has become a recent catchphrase but at Raincity Grill it has been a philosophy for twenty years."

Some specific sustainable menu items include "Brioche French Toast" with Fraser Valley compote and house-made huckleberry syrup, a "Spinach And Berry" salad with North Arm Farm spinach, local berries and Okanagan goat's cheese and "Fraser Valley Duck Breast" with wild coastal huckleberries. If you're on a budget, check out their $10 fish and chips window. Libations are also in line with their 'go local' philosophy, as the restaurant serves wines from the Pacific West Coast.

Edible Canada Bistro

Located on Granville Island, Edible Canada's bistro does an excellent job of supporting the farm-to-feast philosophy. While their food is fresh and locally grown, even using onsite plant boxes of herbs and produce and making use of the adjacent public market, their efforts extend beyond eating. In fact, the venue features tabletops made of recycled fir tree, hostess stands created with discarded beach cedar and two complimentary charging stations for electric vehicles. As for drinks, they're spearheading the revolution of offering wine on tap, an environmentally-friendly way to serve vino as it eliminates the packaging and, because 27% of glass is recovered for recycling, stops millions of bottles from going to the landfill. Menu items range from $11 to $28, while their bacon window also offers inexpensive eats.

Located in Vancouver's lively entertainment district, The Templeton is an old-fashioned retro diner serving comfort food in a sustainable way. Most ingredients are organic and locally sourced, and there are an array of vegetarian and vegan options, like lentil loaf, tofu omelets, Portobello mushroom burgers and veggie bacon. If you're a carnivore, The Templeton features organic, free-range and non-medicated meats. Best of all, this venue is cheap to moderately priced with $10 burgers, $10 fish and chips and $16 steaks. Finish it off with a $5 deep-fried Mars bar.

Trafalgar's Bistro

Trafalgars Bistro and adjacent Sweet Obsession bakery in Kitsilano are pioneers when it comes to sustainability. In the summer of 2011, the venues launched a recycling and composting initiative that was the first of its kind by installing a Green Good composting system. By doing this, they were able to eliminate all organic waste going to landfill, with 99% of the remaining trash being recycled. Additionally, their strong association with Inner City Farms means they can make use of their compost in Vancouver's urban gardens. Biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid can identify patients with Alzheimer's disease

Analysis of specific biomarkers in a cerebrospinal fluid sample can differentiate patients with Alzheimer's disease from those with other types of dementia. The method, which is being studied by researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy, may eventually permit earlier detection of Alzheimer's disease.

Due to the similarity of the symptoms, differentiating patients with Alzheimer's from those with other types of dementia ? or patients with Parkinsondisease from those with other motor disorders ? is often difficult.

Making a proper diagnosis is essential if proper treatment and medication are to commence at an early stage. A research team at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, is developing a new method to differentiate patients with Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson disease by analyzing a cerebrospinal fluid sample.

The study, led by Professor Kaj Blennow and conducted among 450 patients at Sk?ne University Hospital and Sahlgrenska University Hospital, involved testing five proteins that serve as biomarkers for the two diseases.

"Previous studies have shown that Alzheimer's disease is associated with biochemical changes in specific proteins of the brain," says Annika ?hrfelt, a researcher at Sahlgrenska Academy. "This study has found that the inclusion of a new protein can differentiate patients with Alzheimer's disease from those with Lewy body dementia, Parkinson disease dementia and other types of dementia."

Similarly, the biomarkers can differentiate patients with Parkinson disease from those with atypical Parkinsonian disorders.

"Additional studies are needed before the biomarkers can be used in clinical practice during the early stages of disease," says ?hrfelt, "but these results represent an important step along the way."
