Bundles

Bundles are a new feature that allow you to create easily-read "bundles" of RP posts. Until now, it has been difficult to go back and read any "scenes" taking place in Chat from the Multiverse. You could go and read the posts from a single character in their profile, but it was impossible to "tag" characters to have them all together. Now, you can go back and create a "bundle" by selecting all the posts that belong together, allowing anyone to go back and read them together as a cohesive scene.

Orange County Register owner eyes Tribune papers

?

SANTA ANA, Calif. ? The publisher of the Orange County Register said Thursday that at an investor group he leads may want to buy Tribune Co.'s newspapers after the media conglomerate emerges from bankruptcy.

"We clearly have the means and the team by which to look seriously at the Tribune papers and, from the outside, they may very well have enough of the elements that we're looking for," said Aaron Kushner, chief executive of 2100 Trust LLC, which bought Freedom Communications Inc. and its flagship paper, the Register, in July.

Tribune, which is expected to leave bankruptcy protection soon, owns the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Baltimore Sun and five other daily newspapers. The Chicago-based conglomerate also operates 23 television stations.

Kushner cautioned that he hasn't examined Tribune's finances but signaled he would move quickly if he determined its newspapers are a good fit.

"I think it's a pretty small group that potentially could fit our model," he said in an interview.

Kushner, who is also Freedom Communications' CEO, has overseen the hiring of dozens of journalists and a major expansion of the print edition of the Register, the nation's 20th-largest newspaper by circulation and a direct competitor of the Los Angeles Times. Freedom Communications is the 39-year-old's first foray in newspapers after he flirted with buying The Boston Globe and newspapers in Maine.

Tribune filed for bankruptcy protection in December 2008, less than a year after a debt-laden buyout engineered by Sam Zell. Its new owners include JPMorgan Chase & Co., debt specialist Angelo, Gordon & Co., and hedge fund Oaktree Capital Management.

Kushner said he expects the Tribune's new owners would sell the newspapers in a single package.

"There's a tremendous amount of infrastructure that's shared among the newspapers, and they have been together, with the exception of the LA Times, for a long time," Kushner said. "Disassembling them in an auction sort of a way or a process may be achievable, but our sense is it would end up resulting in significantly less for the current owners of the Tribune Co."

Freedom recently sold The Gazette in Colorado Springs, Colo. Kushner signaled he was open to selling Freedom's five smaller newspapers in California and Arizona.

"We wouldn't have bought them if we didn't love them. That said, if we find that there is an owner that can do an even better job than us with them, we'll talk with them," he said.

Eckhart Tolle on How to Find God (VIDEO)

Looking for God? According to spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle, your search may be over. God, he says, is really "the power of life itself."

In this clip from a recent episode of "Super Soul Sunday," Eckhart tells Oprah Winfrey that believing in your personal concept of God is no substitute for the reality of God. "When you take your attention into the present moment, a certain alertness arises," he says. "You become more conscious of what's around you, but also, strangely, a sense of presence that is both within and without."

To feel that presence, Eckhart advises that you try a simple exercise that he devised to help you quiet your mind. Hold your hands out in front of you. One hand symbolizes the past, the other the future. Focus on the space between your hands. That is the present. "It can be a little reminder to help you behold that sense of presence," he says. "The only thing you ever have is now."

"Super Soul Sunday" airs Sundays at 11 a.m. ET on OWN.

Oil down slightly as fiscal-cliff talks continue

NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of oil fell slightly Friday, as the stock market drifted lower and efforts continued in Washington to strike a budget deal before the year-end deadline.

In afternoon trading, U.S. benchmark crude was down 21 cents to $90.66 a barrel.

Hopes that a budget compromise might be reached were still alive as congressional leaders met with President Barack Obama at the White House. The Republican-dominated House is set to meet Sunday and stay in session until Jan. 2, the day before the new Congress is sworn in. Without a budget deal, automatic tax hikes and government spending cuts could send the economy into recession, economists say.

Traders are also weighing rising energy supplies.

Phil Flynn, of the Price Futures Group, said that a government report Friday showed U.S. oil production hit its highest point since March of 1993, at nearly 7 million barrels per day.

The Energy Department's Energy Information Administration said that U.S. crude supplies fell by 600,000 barrels last week but are still 13 percent above year-ago levels. Analysts expected a drop of 2 million barrels, according to Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos.

Gasoline supplies rose by 3.8 million barrels, well above the 250,000-barrel increase that analysts forecast. Demand for gasoline at the wholesale level is nearly 3 percent lower than a year ago.

Flynn also said traders were looking beyond the fiscal cliff to supply changes in the new year. Next month the pipeline between Cushing, Okla., and Texas will increase flow. That means more buyers can access that oil. Flynn expects that will drive up the price. And with much of the nation facing its real first cold snap of the winter, Flynn said many traders also expect more demand for petroleum products.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline was down 3 cents to $2.76 a gallon.

? Heating oil fell 3 cents to $3.02 a gallon.

? Natural gas rose 4 cents to $3.47 per 1,000 cubic feet.

In London, Brent crude, used to price various kinds of foreign oil, fell 47 cents to $110.33 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

India gang rape spurs national dialogue

An Indian woman who was the victim of a gang rape and brutal beating earlier this month in New Delhi has been flown to Singapore for treatment, while the rest of India debates women's safety.

By Shivam Vij,?Contributor / December 27, 2012

Indian protesters listen to a speaker during a protest against a recent gang rape of a young woman in a moving bus in New Delhi, India, Thursday. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pledged Thursday to take action to protect the nation's women while the young rape victim was flown to Singapore for treatment of severe internal injuries.

The protests were sparked by the gang rape and brutal assault of a 23-year-old student on a bus in the elite South Delhi district on Dec. 16.?

As the girl battles for her life in a Singapore hospital, Indians are debating how to make the country safer for women. Ten days after the incident, it dominates newspaper headlines and op-ed pages, pushing to the margins stories like the retirement of cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, the popular Indian sportsperson, highlighting just how much the case has affected people.

Sexual harassment is rampant in India, and the public has been largely apathetic to women?s plight, but many are hoping the attack could be a turning point in the way India treats women.

Calls for capital punishment, including the chemical castration of rapists, have died down, with various women?s groups decrying them. Given that in 94 percent of rape cases the rapist is known to the victim, Nilanjana S. Roy, writing in The Hindu newspaper she wonders if the protestors would be okay with death penalty if it were their father, uncle, neighbors, or even if it meant convicting Indian security forces in conflict zones. ?

The Monitor reported that India is considering a fast-track court process to expedite rape cases and step up punishment for sexual violence on the heels of the bus rape incident.?

Beyond the law, what needs to happen, writes Shilpa Phadke, author of a book on women?s safety in Mumbai, has to do with how Indians use their streets: ?We are safer when there are more women (and more men) on the streets. When shops are open, when restaurants are open, when there are hawkers and yes, even sex workers on the street, the street is a safer space for us all.?

The outrage that this case has spurred might finally bring about a cultural change in India, Stephanie Nolen of The Globe and Mail suggests in a report:?

RolePlayGateway?

( I received Sugarplum's pemission before following through with makig this topic. It is basically a place where roleplayers can ask the characters questions. Feel free to ask whatever question you like (within reason), and the characters asked them will answer them as soon as they can. This is both for laughs and information. (Inspiration came from watching three episodes of "Lucky Star" (In Japanese, with English subs), where at the end of each episode you see two of the anime's characters in a show bit called the "Lucky Channel" (or "Channel Lucky", I don't know which.))

Me: Aaron and Othniel, you are on in three... two... one... hit it!

Charles: *Enthusiastic like a host is in any reality show (all the characters are the host, in this case)* 'Ello, 'ello, 'ello, everybody! I'm Charles Aaron, live with you, in the OOC, with my yankie butler and best mate, Eliab Othniel!

Eliab: *In a dull kind of voice, smiling* 'Ey!

Charles: *Smirk* I'll work with you on that, mate.

Eliab: *shrugs* I just... don't say much, most of the time.

Charles: *gives a playful nudge* You could have fooled me with how you interact with Katherine!

Eliab: *nervous laugh* Why don't we just... change the subject a little?

Charles: *placing an elbow on the desk, his head resting on the hand* Oh, yeah... now I remember...

Eliab: *acting casual, so to make a save* What is it?

Charles: *back to his enthusiastic tone, both hands on the desk* We almost forgot that there is mail, already! *pulls out the envelope* This is from ZacharyTC! It reads... *clears throat* "Now, I already know the answer to the question, but I will ask, anyway: Could you ellaborate on what kind of pressure is put onto you from your father, Eliab?"

Eliab: *Shrugs again* Well, that's as good as any question to answer, so I'll indulge the crowd some. Anyway, for starters, my brother, Thomas, is not particularly one to let relationships get in the way of his career in Horticulture. As such, he leaves little time for a social life, thus he does not even allow himself time to date anybody. Because of that, and the fact Rebecca, as far as I know, never expressed much interest in dating or relationships, either, I'm the most likely of the Othniel siblings to continue the family line. So, my dad is always reminding me of how I should behave and present myself, telling me proper manners, giving lessons on parenting, and all that jazz. Basically, I am being pressured to mature at a quicker pace than Thomas had and also more quickly than Rebecca is maturing, right now.

Rebecca: Hey!

Charles: You seem to be mature enough, to me, mate.

Eliab: Well, anyway, now you know the answer to the question.

Charles: *to the roleplayers* Well, now it's your turn to ask us questions! Stay tuned for more fun and answers as the questions and answers keep rolling!

Eliab: Please keep them all within reason, fellas and ladies.

Best Android puzzle games of 2012

Next to strategy games, puzzles games are one of my favorites to play. I enjoy the mental challenge of puzzle games and that I can pick them up and play them at any time. 2012 saw the release of several cool and challenging titles from the genre. These today are the ones I (and my kids) enjoyed the most this year.

If I had to describe this game in one word, it would be crazy. Four bizarre monsters have invaded the city and they are hungry. You need to feed Boat Head, Reginald Starfire, Mr. Shigoto and Lord Ferocious by sliding the appropriately colored buildings into their mouths. Once you get into the game you will fully grasp its insanity. The lights, music, art style, and speed of the game make for a unique, exciting, and enjoyable game.

The premise of the game is simple; swipe the color buildings to the monster with the corresponding color. You earn more points when three or more of the same color condo are stacked together. The color condos continually fall, so you have to be quick. If you give the wrong color condo to a monster, they are not happy. The game comes with a tutorial if needed. There are two game modes: Endless and Time Attack. In Endless you play until your stack of condos falls over and the ?goal in Time Attack is to get the best score within a certain amount of time.

Where?s My Perry? is the cousin to Disney?s Where?s My Water?, and a game I have to fight my kids to play. In this game you help Agent P, who is a platypus, get to headquarters. To get there he must travel through transportation tubes but Dr. Doofenshmirtz?, the evil villain, has blocked the way. You need to figure out how to use the water to active the transportation tubes. You utilize water in all its different forms, including ?ice, steam, and liquid, in order to solve the puzzle.

The game currently has four missions with 20 levels in each. There is also a locked area that you can access via in-app purchase. When doing each puzzle you need to try and collect all three gnomes and the top-secret collectibles to unlock secret files and become a top spy. The game really is a challenge and I find myself redoing most levels over and over again to improve my score and find all of the secret items.

Quell is a quiet, relaxing puzzle game when compared the two mentioned above. The market description of the game calls it a zen puzzler and I would have to agree. The graphics and background music create a very peaceful ambiance?to the game. The game gives you three profiles and a huge number of in-game achievements.

The game has seven stages, all labeled between the years 1928 to 1946. Within each year there are three stages. Once you choose a stage, then you pick a level. If it is your first time for a stage you must complete the levels in order to unlock them and the next stage. The goal for each level is to swipe the raindrop around the board to collect all of the pearls. You will want to collect all of the pearls in the least amount of moves. You can only move the raindrop up/down and right/left, thus the challenge. As you progress you will earn hints that can come in handy.

This is a new game to Android and quite challenging. In this game you are given the task of building a city, one block at a time. The game board is broken into city blocks and columns in a six by six grid. The buildings you can place appear in the building queue to the left. You then need to place them in the grid with the goal of building houses with positive ?value on them. Once the column to the far left has reached its needed value, it disappears and a new column appears to the right. You continue until you cannot clear any more columns.

There are a variety of different buildings you can place, some will help and others will hinder. Police, library, hospital all help, will parking lots, landfills, and prisons are less desirable. The key to the game is to try and plan ahead. You need to make sure you have spots open to help get positive values on the homes and that you can clear the far left column. You can see what is coming in the queue but where to place them. The game comes with six ?in-game challenges in addition to the regular game. The developer likes to call it ?Tetris meets Sim City? and it will keep you busy for a while.

So what puzzle games do you like? Which ones did you spend the most time on in 2012? As I said I have played a lot of them this year, but these are some that stood out to me and my kids. Can?t wait to see what 2013 will bring.

Baseball: Crestwood’s Mike Recchia signs with Baltimore Orioles

Updated: December 17, 2012 10:07PM

As he spent the summer dominating Frontier League hitters for the Windy City ThunderBolts, Crestwood native Mike Recchia tried not to worry about whether he would get another chance at affiliated ball.

?Baseball?s supposed to be fun,? he said. ?I just wanted to have fun and not think too much about it. I tried to tell myself ?If it happens, it happens.? ?

Monday, it happened.

Recchia signed with the Baltimore Orioles and will report to their spring training. From there, he expects to join the Class-A Advanced Frederick Keys.

The Shepard alum spent 2010 and ?11 in the New York Yankees organization, going 6-4 with a 3.37 ERA before being released.

?It?s great to have a second opportunity,? he said. ?I?m going to go to spring training and work my butt off.?

Recchia is the second member of the 2012 T-Bolts to be signed by the Orioles, joining shortstop Chris Wade, who signed Dec. 7.

?I?m excited for Wade, and it?s good to have someone you?re comfortable with on and off the field going with you,? Recchia said.

Recchia went 11-3 with a 2.51 ERA for Windy City and won the Brian Tollberg Award as the league?s top pitcher. He set league records with 177 strikeouts and five complete-game shutouts.

?It was huge for my confidence,? he said. ?I was relieving exclusively with the Yankees then I come (to Windy City) and start and pitch (1501/3) innings and felt like I was getting stronger as the year went on. I realized there are people who do that who make millions and I showed that I can do that, too.?

Recchia hopes to follow in the footsteps of Dylan Axelrod and Andrew Werner, former T-Bolts pitchers who reached the majors.

?I?ve just got to keep performing the way I am and hopefully, I can be a dominant pitcher in the Orioles organization,? he said.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A union representing hundreds of Broadway theater cleaners, porters, elevator operators and bathroom attendants reached a tentative agreement with theater producers to avert a strike, both sides said Monday.

The potential deal must still be ratified by the 250 theater workers represented by the 32BJ union, a process expected to be completed by next week. Details of the deal were not immediately revealed.

"This is a fair agreement that addresses the concerns of our members, the men and women who work hard every day to keep theaters safe, clean and running for the millions of theatergoers who come to Broadway from around the world," said Shirley Aldebol, vice president of 32BJ.

Members of the union last week authorized a strike if an acceptable new deal wasn't reached by the end of the year. The current contact ends Dec. 30. Workers are seeking pay increases and better health care benefits.

The Broadway League, which represents producers and theater owners, said the tentative agreement came after productive negotiations.

Any strike would have affected workers at 32 of Broadway's 40 theaters where the 32BJ has a contract, including all the Shubert, Nederlander and Jujamcyn-owned theaters, as well as the Circle in the Square Theatre.

The most recent major strike on Broadway was in late 2007, when a 19-day walkout dimmed the lights on more than two dozen shows and cost producers and the city millions of dollars in lost revenue.

The 32BJ, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union, has more than 120,000 total members, with most concentrated in the Northeast. It represents janitors, property maintenance workers, doormen, security officers, window cleaners and food service workers. The Coalition of Broadway Unions and Guilds had backed 32BJ in its strike authorization.

Newtown shooter's computer badly damaged

A computer at the Connecticut home where Newtown, Conn., school shooter Adam Lanza lived with his mother was badly damaged, perhaps smashed with a hammer, said police who hope the machine might still yield clues to the gunman's motive.

The computer's hard drive appeared to have been badly damaged with a hammer or screw driver, law enforcement authorities told ABC News, complicating efforts to exploit it for evidence.

Officials have "seized significant evidence at [Lanza's] residence," said Connecticut State Police spokesman Paul Vance, adding that the process of sifting through that much forensic evidence would be a lengthy and "painstaking process."

Authorities also told ABC News that the weapons used in Friday's rampage at Sandyhook Elementary School, which left dead 20 children and seven adults including Lanza's mother Nancy, were purchased by his mother between 2010 and 2012.

According to the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, Lanza visited shooting ranges several times in recent years, and went at least one time with his mother.

The first funeral for a child killed in the massacre was held today in Fairfield, Conn., where mourners gathered to remember the too-short life of first-grader Noah Pozner.

Authorities also revealed this morning that two adult women shot during the rampage survived and their accounts will likely be integral to the investigation.

"Investigators will, in fact, speak with them when it's medically appropriate and they will shed a great deal of light on the facts and circumstances of this tragic investigation," Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance said at a news conference today.

Both survivors are women and are now home from the hospital after being shot, police said. Officials had previously mentioned just one adult survivor. The women have not been identified and police did not give details on their injuries.

READ MORE: School nurse hid from gunman.

Both adults, Vance said, were wounded in the "lower extremities," but did not indicate where in the building they were when they were injured.

Moving trucks were seen outside Sandy Hook Elementary School this morning, as school officials prepare to move furniture and supplies to a vacant school in neighboring Monroe.

Sandy Hook itself will remain a secure crime scene "indefinitely," said Vance.

CLICK HERE for complete coverage of the tragedy at Sandy Hook.

Police say Adam Lanza, 20, forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday, spraying bullets on students and faculty. Lanza killed 20 children and six adults before turning the gun on himself.

Lanza also killed his mother Nancy Lanza at the home they shared before going to school.

"There are many, many witnesses that need to be interviewed," Vance said. "We will not stop until we have interviewed every last one of them."

Vance said the investigation could take weeks or months to complete. "It's not something done in 60 minutes like you see on T.V."

Some of the other key witnesses will be children who survived the shooting spree by playing dead, hiding in closets and bathrooms and being rescued by dedicated teachers.

"Any interviews with any children will be done with professionals...as appropriate," Vance said. "We'll handle that extremely delicately when the time arises."

CLICK HERE for a tribute to the shooting victims.

The first funerals for victims of the shooting are today, beginning with 6-year-olds Noah Pozner and Jack Pinto.

Officials said today that the Sandy Hook Elementary School, where the shooting took place, will be closed "indefinitely."

Both the school and the home where shootings took place are being held by police as crime scenes and Vance predicted authorities would spend "months" investigating the elementary school.

All Newtown schools are closed today to give residents more time to cope. Every school except for Sandy Hook is expected to re-open Tuesday.

The town of Monroe has offered to open to Sandy Hook students the Chalk Hill School, a former middle school that currently houses the town's EMS and recreational departments.

Officials in Monroe, less than 10 miles from Newtown, say the building could be ready for students by the end of the week, but have not yet set a date to resume classes.

Nearly 100 volunteers are working to ensure the building complies with fire and security regulations and are working to retorfit the school with bathroom facilities for young children.

"We're working to make the school safe and secure for students," said Monroe Police Department spokesman Lt. Brian H. McCauley.

The neighboring community's school is expected to be ready to accommodate students in the next few days, though an exact schedule has not yet been published.

While the families grieve, federal and state authorities are working around the clock to answer the question on so many minds: "Why?"

ABC News has learned that investigators have seized computers belonging to Adam Lanza from the home he shared with his mother. Three weapons were found at the school scene and a fourth was recovered from Lanza's car. Lanza had hundreds of rounds and used multiple high-capacity magazines when he went on the rampage, according to Connecticut State Police.

Vance said that every single electronic device, weapon and round will be thoroughly examined and investigated as well as every aspect of Lanza's life going "back to the date of birth."

ABC News has learned that both the shooter and his mother spent time at an area gun range; however it was not yet known whether they had shot there.

President Obama delivered an emotional address at an interfaith prayer vigil in Newtown on Sunday night, comforting the community.

"I come to offer the love and prayers of a nation," the president said. "I am very mindful that mere words cannot match the depths of your sorrow nor can they heal your wounded hearts. I can only hope it helps to know you are not alone ... and that all across this land we have wept with you."

"These tragedies must end," Obama said. "And to end them we must change."

Thousands came out of the prayer vigil where Red Cross members distributed stuffed dogs to children and adults wept in the auditorium.

"We needed this. We needed to be together, here in this room, in the gymnasium, outside the doors of this school, in living rooms around the world," said Rev. Matt Crebbin, senior minister of the Newtown Congregational Church. "These darkest days of our community shall not be the final word heard from us."

Toward a new model of the cell: Everything you always wanted to know about genes

Dec. 16, 2012 ? Turning vast amounts of genomic data into meaningful information about the cell is the great challenge of bioinformatics, with major implications for human biology and medicine. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and colleagues have proposed a new method that creates a computational model of the cell from large networks of gene and protein interactions, discovering how genes and proteins connect to form higher-level cellular machinery.

The findings are published in the December 16 advance online publication of Nature Biotechnology.

"Our method creates ontology, or a specification of all the major players in the cell and the relationships between them," said first author Janusz Dutkowski, PhD, postdoctoral researcher in the UC San Diego Department of Medicine. It uses knowledge about how genes and proteins interact with each other and automatically organizes this information to form a comprehensive catalog of gene functions, cellular components, and processes.

"What's new about our ontology is that it is created automatically from large datasets. In this way, we see not only what is already known, but also potentially new biological components and processes -- the bases for new hypotheses," said Dutkowski.

Originally devised by philosophers attempting to explain the nature of existence, ontologies are now broadly used to encapsulate everything known about a subject in a hierarchy of terms and relationships. Intelligent information systems, such as iPhone's Siri, are built on ontologies to enable reasoning about the real world. Ontologies are also used by scientists to structure knowledge about subjects like taxonomy, anatomy and development, bioactive compounds, disease and clinical diagnosis.

A Gene Ontology (GO) exists as well, constructed over the last decade through a joint effort of hundreds of scientists. It is considered the gold standard for understanding cell structure and gene function, containing 34,765 terms and 64,635 hierarchical relations annotating genes from more than 80 species.

"GO is very influential in biology and bioinformatics, but it is also incomplete and hard to update based on new data," said senior author Trey Ideker, PhD, chief of the Division of Genetics in the School of Medicine and professor of bioengineering in UC San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering.

"This is expert knowledge based upon the work of many people over many, many years," said Ideker, who is also principal investigator of the National Resource for Network Biology, based at UC San Diego. "A fundamental problem is consistency. People do things in different ways, and that impacts what findings are incorporated into GO and how they relate to other findings. The approach we have proposed is a more objective way to determine what's known and uncover what's new."

In their paper, Dutkowski, Ideker and colleagues capitalized upon the growing power and utility of new technologies like high-throughput assays and bioinformatics to create elaborately detailed datasets describing complex biological networks. To test the approach, the scientists pulled together multiple such datasets, applied their method, and then compared the resulting "network-extracted ontology" to the existing GO.

They found that their ontology captured the majority of known cellular components, plus many additional terms and relationships, which subsequently triggered updates of the existing GO.

Neither Ideker nor Dutkowski say the new approach is intended to replace the current GO. Rather, they envision it as complementary high-tech model that identifies both known and uncharacterized biological components derived directly from data, something the current GO does not do well. Moreover, they note a network-extracted ontology can be continuously updated and refined with every new dataset, moving scientists closer to the complete model of the cell.

Conn. gunman had hundreds of rounds of ammunition

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? The gunman in the Connecticut shooting rampage was carrying an arsenal of hundreds of rounds of especially deadly ammunition ? enough to kill just about every student in the school if given enough time, authorities said Sunday, raising the chilling possibility that the bloodbath could have been far worse.

Adam Lanza shot himself in the head just as he heard police drawing near to the classroom where he was slaughtering helpless children, but he had more ammunition at the ready in the form of multiple, high-capacity clips each capable of holding 30 bullets.

The disclosure on Sunday sent shudders throughout this picturesque New England community as grieving families sought to comfort each other during church services devoted to impossible questions like that of a 6-year-old girl who asked her mother: "The little children, are they with the angels?"

With so much grieving left to do, many of Newtown's 27,000 people wondered whether life could ever return to normal. And as the workweek was set to begin, parents weighed whether to send their own children back to school.

Gov. Dannel Malloy said the shooter decided to kill himself when he heard police closing in about 10 minutes into the attack.

"We surmise that it was during the second classroom episode that he heard responders coming and apparently at that decided to take his own life," Malloy said on ABC's "This Week."

Authorities said they found hundreds of unused bullets at the school, which enrolled about 670 students.

"There was a lot of ammo, a lot of clips," said state police Lt. Paul Vance. "Certainly a lot of lives were potentially saved."

The chief medical examiner has said the ammunition was the type designed to break up inside a victim's body and inflict the maximum amount of damage, tearing apart bone and tissue.

By late afternoon, President Barack Obama arrived to console families and speak at a vigil in memory of the 26 teachers and schoolchildren who were killed in the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.

Newtown officials couldn't say whether Sandy Hook Elementary School, would ever reopen.

"We're just now getting ready to talk to our son about who was killed," said Robert Licata, the father of a boy who was at the school during the shooting but escaped harm. "He's not even there yet."

Jim Agostine, superintendent of schools in nearby Monroe, said plans were being made for students from Sandy Hook to attend classes in his town this week.

The road ahead for Newtown was clouded with grief.

"I feel like we have to get back to normal, but I don't know if there is normal anymore," said Kim Camputo, mother of two children, ages 5 and 10, who attend a different school. "I'll definitely be dropping them off and picking them up myself for a while."

Also Sunday, a Connecticut official said the gunman's mother was found dead in her pajamas in bed, shot four times in the head with a .22-caliber rifle. The killer then went to the school with guns he took from his mother, got inside by breaking a window and began blasting his way through the building.

As churches opened their doors, federal agents checked out dozens of gun stores and shooting ranges across Connecticut, chasing leads they hoped would cast light on Lanza's life.

Investigators have offered no motive for the shooting, and police have found no letters or diaries that could shed light on it.

School officials were discussing how to send survivors back to class, but Newtown police Lt. George Sinko said he "would find it very difficult" for students to return to the school.

"We want to keep these kids together," he added. "They need to support each other."

Jennifer Waters, who at 6 is the same age as many of the dead but attends another school, came to Mass at Saint Rose of Lima Roman Catholic church with lots of questions.

"The little children ? are they with the angels?" she asked her mother.

Joan Waters assured her daughter that they were, then hushed the child as services continued with boxes of tissues placed in each pew and window sill.

At a later Mass at St. Rose of Lima, the priest stopped midway through the service and told worshippers to leave, because someone had phoned in a threat. Police searched the church and the rectory but found nothing dangerous.

An overflow crowd of more than 800 people packed the church where eight children will be buried this week. Lanza and his mother also attended the church. Spokesman Brian Wallace said the diocese has yet to be asked to provide funerals for either.

In his homily, the Rev. Jerald Doyle tried to answer the question of how parishioners could find joy in a holiday season with so much sorrow.

"You won't remember what I say, and it will become unimportant," he said. "But you will really hear deep down that word that will finally and ultimately bring peace and joy. That is the word by which we live. That is the word by which we hope. That is the word by which we love."

The rifle used was a Bushmaster .223-caliber, a civilian version of the military's M-16 and a model commonly seen at marksmanship competitions. It's similar to the weapon used in the 2002 sniper killings in the Washington, D.C., area and in a recent shopping mall shooting in Oregon.

Versions of the AR-15 were outlawed in the United States under the 1994 assault weapons ban. That law expired in 2004, and Congress, in a nod to the political clout of the gun-rights lobby, did not renew it.

Investigators have said they believe Adam Lanza attended Sandy Hook many years ago, but they couldn't explain why he went there Friday.

Authorities said Lanza had no criminal history, and it was not clear whether he had a job.

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the unfolding investigation, has said Lanza had been diagnosed with Asperger's, a mild form of autism often characterized by social awkwardness.

People with the disorder are often highly intelligent. While they can become frustrated more easily, there is no evidence of a link between Asperger's and violent behavior, experts say.

Packers beat Bears, win North

Rodgers throws 3 TD passes to Jones and Matthew sacks Cutler twice

updated 4:58 p.m. ET Dec. 16, 2012

CHICAGO - The Green Bay Packers had the best comeback for all that trash-talk from the Chicago Bears.

Another NFC North title.

The Packers clinched their second straight division crown with a 21-13 victory over their archrivals Sunday - at Soldier Field, no less.

Aaron Rodgers connected with James Jones on all three touchdowns, Clay Matthews hounded Jay Cutler with two sacks and the Packers limited the Bears to just 190 yards, their third-lowest total of the season. Rodgers finished 23 of 36 for 291 yards as Green Bay won its sixth straight against Chicago.

Brandon Marshall had a 15-yard TD catch for the Bears. But Cutler had another dismal day against the Packers, throwing an interception that led to Green Bay's second touchdown, and Alshon Jeffery was whistled for three offensive pass interference calls late in the second half.

Chicago has lost five of six and is in danger of missing the playoffs after beginning the season 7-1. Boos rained down on the Bears in the fourth quarter, and again as they walked off the field.

Packers vs. Bears is the NFL's oldest - and fiercest - rivalry, and it got a little more heated earlier in the week when Marshall and Lance Briggs ripped on their neighbors to the north.

Marshall was particularly vehement, saying he'd never disliked a team as much as he did the Packers.

Green Bay had held him to 24 yards on two catches in their first meeting back in September, and the NFL's receptions leader called the rematch "personal," adding, "But the talk, you have to back it up. We'll go out there and we'll do everything we need to do to get a win."

Marshall did his part, sidestepping one tackle and stiff-arming Casey Hayward on his way to the end zone for a touchdown that gave Chicago a 7-0 lead in the second quarter. He screamed and tossed the ball into the stands while the Chicago sideline erupted in high fives and hand slaps.

But the Packers silenced the Bears - and their fans - with a touchdown, interception and another touchdown, all in a three-minute span.

Having already been sacked twice, Rodgers was on the run again on third-and-6 when he spotted Randall Cobb down the right sideline. He threw a dart to Cobb, who hauled it in for a 31-yard gain that put the Packers at the Chicago 35. Three plays later, Rodgers connected with Jones for a 29-yard score that tied the game at 7.

After exchanging punts, Cutler was looking for Devin Hester but found Hayward, instead. It was the sixth pick of the season for the rookie, who grabbed the ball at midfield and returned it 24 yards. Five plays later, Rodgers hooked up with Jones again, this time for an 8-yard catch that made it 14-7 at halftime.

The Packers made it 21 unanswered points on the first drive of the second half. In another third-and-long situation, Rodgers threw incomplete to Jermichael Finley.

But the Packers got a second chance when Chris Conte was called for pass interference. After a delay of game penalty on Green Bay, Rodgers found Jones for a 6-yard score.

It was Jones' first three-touchdown game and the fourth multiple-TD game of his career.

The Bears had a chance to get back in the game when Charles Tillman forced a fumble by Ryan Grant and Nick Roach recovered it. Chicago got another break when Green Bay safety Morgan Burnett hauled Jeffery down right in front of the end zone - and right in front of an official. The pass interference penalty gave Chicago the ball at the Green Bay 1.

But the Bears could only get a 34-yard field goal by Olindo Mare out of it after Jeffery was called for pass interference, his first of three.

PFT: Briggs calls Finley 'idiot' ahead of showdown

GriffinsGetty Images

Robert Griffin III has yet to specifically respond to Rob Parker?s bizarre rant regarding RG3?s refusal to be defined by his race.? Griffin?s father, however, has.

?He needs to define what ?one of us? is,? Robert Griffin Jr. told Jim Corbett of USA Today.? ?That guy needs to define that.? I wouldn?t say it?s racism.? I would just say some people put things out there about people so they can stir things up.

?Robert is in really good shape on who he is, where he needs to get to in order to seek the goals he has in life . . . so I don?t take offense.?

RG2 hit the nail on the head when he said ?stir things up.?? Parker?s comments flowed directly from ESPN?s desire to ?embrace debate? via the only aspect of the now-defunct Cold Pizza show that was even remotely interesting.

Comments like Parker?s don?t pop up out of thin air.? Every segment of First Take is planned, with producers finding topics on which the on-air personalities either genuinely disagree or can be coaxed into disagreeing.? As MDS pointed out last night, the segment in question started with RG3?s comments regarding his desire to not be identified by race.

The producers picked the subject.? The producers knew ? or at least should have known ? what Parker was going to say.? The entire excursion is a product of the format, which ESPN president John Skipper recently defended in an interview with SportsBusiness Journal.

?It?s just another show,? Skipper said of First Take.? ?It?s not journalism.? Nobody goes, ?Gee, look how awful it is that CBS does these awful reality shows.? Doesn?t that taint their great news organization??? We have seven networks.? There?s 8,760 hours per year.? We?re programming 50-60,000 hours per year. . . .? But people say, ?Gee, that awful debate that you?re doing, how can the great SportsCenter coexist with the debate of First Take.? I don?t know, how do infomercials coexist with the great journalism they?re doing someplace else??

First of all, when has anyone recently accused SportsCenter of being ?great??? Second, the CBS reality shows aren?t filmed on a set that looks a lot like the set of the CBS Evening News.? Third, Skipper has done quite well for himself, considering that he is unable to come up extemporaneously with any quality synonyms for the word ?awful.?? Finally, infomercials rarely include content that the network later must acknowledge was inappropriate.

In this case, the level of premeditation was likely equivalent to an infomercial.? Acting on the mandate to ?embrace debate,? the producers are as guilty as Parker for either letting him say what he said or failing to keep him from crossing the line.

Again. And the ultimate blame goes to the network that craves the ratings that come from playing with fire, but that lacks the ability to avoid getting periodically burned.

Team solves mystery associated with DNA repair

Friday, December 14, 2012

Every time a human or bacterial cell divides it first must copy its DNA. Specialized proteins unzip the intertwined DNA strands while others follow and build new strands, using the originals as templates. Whenever these proteins encounter a break ? and there are many ? they stop and retreat, allowing a new cast of molecular players to enter the scene.

Scientists have long sought to understand how one of these players, a repair protein known as RecA in bacterial cells, helps broken DNA find a way to bridge the gap. They knew that RecA guided a broken DNA strand to a matching sequence on an adjoining bit of double-stranded DNA, but they didn't know how. In a new study, researchers report they have identified how the RecA protein does its job.

"The puzzle for scientists has been: How does the damaged DNA look for and find its partner, the matching DNA, so that it can repair itself?" said University of Illinois physics professor Taekjip Ha, who led the study. "Because the genomic DNA is millions of bases long, this task is much like finding a needle in a haystack. We found the answer to how the cell does this so quickly."

The research is described in a paper in eLife, a new open-access journal supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the Max Planck Society and the Wellcome Trust. Ha is an HHMI investigator. The National Science Foundation provided primary funding for this work.

DNA repair is vital to health, vitality and longevity. Disruptions of the process can lead to the early onset of diseases associated with aging or cancer in animals. The breast cancer mutation known as BRCA2, for example, disrupts a gene involved in loading Rad51 (the human equivalent of RecA) onto a broken DNA strand to begin the process of repair.

Previous studies have shown that in bacteria, RecA forms a filament that winds itself around a broken, single strand of DNA. Like a matchmaker trying to find a partner for an unpaired dancer, it scours the corresponding DNA strands for a sequence that will pair up perfectly with the broken strand. Once it finds the sequence, the broken strand steps in and chemically bonds to its new partner, displacing one of the unbroken strands (which eventually pairs with the other broken strand). This elaborate molecular square dance allows the cell to go back to the work of duplicating its genome. Each broken strand now is paired with an unbroken one, and uses the intact strand as a template for replication. (Watch an animation about this process.)

"If a break in DNA occurs, you have to repair it," Ha said. "We wanted to know how RecA helps the DNA find a sequence complementary to it in the sea of genomic DNA, and how it does it so quickly."

To answer this question, the researchers made use of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) to observe in real time the interaction of the RecA protein and the DNA. FRET uses fluorescent molecules whose signals vary in intensity depending on their proximity to one another. By labeling a single DNA strand bound by RecA and putting a different fluorescent label on a stretch of double-stranded DNA, the researchers could see how the molecules interacted with one another.

The team determined that RecA that is bound to a broken, single-stranded DNA molecule actually slides back and forth along the double-stranded DNA molecule searching for a match.

"We discovered that this RecA filament can slide on double-stranded DNA for a span of sequences covering about 200 base pairs of DNA," Ha said. "This is how one strand of DNA can be exchanged with another from a different DNA duplex. That's the process called 'recombination.' "

The discovery explains how DNA repair can occur so quickly, Ha said.

"We did a calculation that found that without this kind of process that we discovered, then DNA repair would be 200 times slower," he said. "So your DNA would not be repaired quickly and damage would accumulate, possibly leading to serious diseases."

The research team included graduate students Kaushik Ragunathan and Cheng Liu. Ha is an affiliate of the Institute for Genomic Biology and a co-director of the NSF Center for the Physics of Living Cells at Illinois.

Biopolymer: Designer interfaces between biological and artificial systems

Dec. 11, 2012 ? In their recently published review article in the Science and Technology of Advanced Materials, Yasuhiko Iwasaki at Kansai University and Kazuhiko Ishihara at the University of Tokyo describe how developments in synthesis techniques have liberated the polymer MPC's potential for a huge range of medical and biological applications.

A polymer inspired by the lipids in cell membranes is proving an invaluable biomaterial. Like the cell membrane, the polymer 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) can provide a surface for biological reactions to take place, but it can also suppress unfavourable processes.

In their recently published review article, Yasuhiko Iwasaki at Kansai University and Kazuhiko Ishihara at the University of Tokyo in Japan describe how developments in synthesis techniques by showing that the 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) have liberated the polymer's potential for a huge range of medical and biological applications.

In fact the polymers were already attracting interest in the early 1970s. However until more facile synthesis techniques were developed investigations were limited and the polymer was little understood. By 1999 MPC polymers were being produced on an industrial scale, allowing more substantial studies. MPC is easily polymerized in a range of architectures. The chemical can suppress reactions such as protein adsorption and cell adhesion and has a high and readily adjustable solubility in water. These versatile properties lend MPC polymers to a range of applications.

The authors also describe methods for generating the polymer for effective use in non-fouling coatings. Formed into poly(MPC) brush structures with specified chain architectures, they can also be used as surfaces for controlling cell functions. In addition, the researchers explain how surface modifications with MPC polymers are effective in improving blood compatibility. The polymers can suppress protein adsorption, platelet adhesion, and platelet activation at blood-contacting surfaces and they can also be solute permeable. As such they are well suited for coating cardiovascular applications such as stents, cardiopulmonary bypasses, and ventricular assist devices.

Based on the fact that "MPC and various kinds of MPC polymers are now available commercially worldwide, and many medical devices treated with MPC polymers are used in clinics," they underline how far research into applications of MPC has advanced, and indicate how many possibilities remain for exploiting the chemical further.

NY court throws out Morgan Keegan's case against sports agent

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York trial court has thrown out a petition by Morgan Keegan & Co to overturn a securities arbitration ruling made in favor of a professional sports agent.

The court ruled that it did not have jurisdiction to hear Morgan Keegan's case, which names sports agent W. Kyle Rote Jr. as a defendant. His company, Athletic Resource Management, has represented star clients such as New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow. The decision, by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Eileen Bransten, was filed on Wednesday.

In February, a Financial Industry Regulatory Authority panel ordered Morgan Keegan, bought by Raymond James Financial Inc in April, to pay Rote and his wife, Mary Lynne, $400,000 for losses tied to a group of money-losing bond funds.

The funds became the subject of state and federal regulatory actions - including recent charges against the funds' former board by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Morgan Keegan agreed to pay a $200 million fine to regulators in 2011.

Morgan Keegan has faced more than 1,000 customer arbitration cases over the bond funds, which invested in risky mortgage-backed securities and were marketed as being safe. Some of those cases are still winding through FINRA's arbitration system.

Arbitration awards are typically binding. Parties can ask courts to overturn them in limited circumstances, such as when arbitrators misapply the law. Morgan Keegan has been particularly aggressive with this strategy, filing numerous court cases to overturn rulings in favor of the fund investors.

A spokesman for Raymond James declined to comment. A spokesman for Regions Financial Corp, which previously owned the brokerage and retains financial responsibility for the bond fund cases, declined to comment.

Schalke's Jones of US suspended for 4 games

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:02 p.m. ET Dec. 12, 2012

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones has been suspended for four Bundesliga games for his ejection in a 3-1 loss to Stuttgart last weekend.

The American was given a red card in the 73rd minute of Saturday's match for a tackle on Ibrahima Traore. The governing body of German soccer said Wednesday that the punishment had to be harsh because Jones is a repeat offender.

Jones holds the club record with five ejections. He also has three yellow cards in the Bundesliga this season and two in the Champions League.

He will miss the last match before the Christmas break, against Freiburg, and games against Hannover, Augsburg and Greuther Fuerth.

Google launches Maps SDK, offers iOS developers alternative cartography

Mountain View's mapping service is back on iOS, but Google's cartography team isn't content with launching a standalone app: it wants to worm its way into other developer's apps, too. Leveraging a URL scheme, Google Maps' iOS SDK allows developers to call up its own navigation application in favor of iOS 6's offering. The SDK also demonstrates how to perform a quick check to make sure Google Maps is installed, allowing apps to default to Apple's solution if it isn't found. Developers looking for a more integrated solution can request access to API keys that will allow their apps to natively utilize Google's cartography in 2D and 3D views. It's a subtle hand to play, but the update SDK gives developers more control over the experience they offer to users, a good thing, to be sure. Looking for access to the new API? Register your interest at Google's developer site -- it's doling access to qualified developers as API keys become available.

U.S. military's secret mini-shuttle lifts off from Florida

Tue Dec 11, 2012 2:02pm EST

(Reuters) - An unmanned Atlas 5 rocket carrying a small robotic space shuttle lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on Tuesday for the third flight in a classified military test program.

The 196-foot (60-meter) rocket blasted off at 1:03 p.m. ET (1603 GMT) carrying the military's original X-37B experimental space plane, also known as an Orbital Test Vehicle, or OTV.

The unmanned, reusable space shuttle, one of two operated by the U.S. Air Force, spent 224 days circling Earth during its debut mission in 2010. A sister ship blasted off in 2011 and landed itself after 469 days in space, completing the second orbital test flight.

The military is not saying how long the third X-37B mission will last, nor what the vehicle will be doing in orbit.

"The focus of the program remains on testing vehicle capabilities and proving the utility and cost-effectiveness of a reusable spacecraft," Air Force spokeswoman Tracy Bunko wrote in an email to Reuters.

While launching from Florida, the military has been landing the robotic space planes at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The agency is considering landing and refurbishing its X-37B spaceships at NASA and Air Force bases in Florida, which has been courting new customers since the retirement of NASA's space shuttles last year.

"We are investigating the possibility of using the former shuttle infrastructure for X-37B OTV landing operations and are looking into consolidating landing, refurbishment and launch operations at Kennedy Space Center or Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in an effort to save money," Bunko wrote.

"Those investigations are in an early state, and any specifics will not be known for some time," she added.

The vehicles, which were built by Boeing, are about one-fourth the size of a NASA shuttle and use solar panels to generate power, rather than chemical fuel cells that limited the space shuttles' time in orbit.

Neither NASA nor the Air Force has plans to upgrade the X-37B to carry people.

The OTV-3 flight had been delayed several months pending the results of an investigation into an upper-stage engine problem during an October 4 Delta 4 flight to put a Global Positioning System satellite into orbit.

The Delta 4 upper-stage is similar to one used on Atlas rockets. Both vehicles are built and flown by United Launch Alliance, a partnership of Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
